ThinkPad 385xd features

LCD display
These systems come with an 800 X 600 resolution, 12.1inch (measured diagonally) TFT display with up to 16 million color combinations that provide excellent viewing capability.

Keyboard with TrackPoint III
The keyboard has the familiar layout of a ThinkPad system with a function key capability that allows you to quickly access system functions, such as power management control. The TrackPoint III is an enhanced TrackPoint(TM) II with an improved non-slip TrackPoint cap and more accurate pointing capability through improved software.

Processor
These systems have a 233 MHz Pentium processor with 512 KB pipeline burst L2 cache with MMX technology for additional performance. MMX is a set of Intel processor instructions providing performance enhancements for multimedia applications.

Memory
The ThinkPad 385XD systems are designed to use non-parity, 64-bit EDO SO DIMM memory. Standard memory is 32 MB and can be expanded ³ to a maximum of 96 MB with 16 MB, 32 MB, or 64 MB cards. An internal slot provides for one extra memory module for users who need more memory.

PCMCIA
The Type III slot can accommodate either two Type I, two Type II, or one Type III PC card. Both 16-bit and 32-bit cards are supported. SystemSoft PCMCIA software is preinstalled and provides support for the latest PCMCIA standard, 2.1. This software enables many PCMCIA cards, allowing you to simply plug in the card (EMEA only) . The bottom PCMCIA slot also contains a ZV port.

PC Card support software (EMEA only)
IBM ThinkPad 385XD comes with software that helps you get status and information on PCMCIA cards installed in the system, and that makes installation and use of PC Cards much easier.

The Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver enables supported PCMCIA cards by sensing them automatically. (PCMCIA cards supported by the Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver are listed in the Sales Manual.)

Storage
The systems have a customer upgradable 3.2 GB HDD. IBM will also offer a 6.4 GB HDD upgrade. All are S.M.A.R.T. HDDs that give an alert if a failure is pending. The 1.44 MB FDD is standard. The three-spindle design of this system allows all the drive units, including the FDD, to be contained inside the ThinkPad 385XD covers (US, CAN & EMEA only) .

The systems have a customer upgradable 4.0 GB HDD. IBM will also offer a 6.4 GB HDD upgrade. All are S.M.A.R.T. HDDs that give an alert if a failure is pending. The 1.44 MB FDD is standard. The three-spindle design of this system allows all the drive units, including the FDD, to be contained inside the ThinkPad 385XD covers (AP only) .

MPEG 1
Software MPEG 1 support on Windows 98 systems provides multimedia viewing capability without hardware prerequisites like a ZV Port card. MPEG 1 decoders facilitate educational use for activities, such as movies, teleconferencing, and games (US, AP, & CAN only) .

Software MPEG 1 support on Windows 95 systems provides multimedia viewing capability without hardware prerequisites like a ZV Port card. MPEG 1 decoders facilitate educational use for activities, such as movies, teleconferencing, and games (EMEA only) .

CD-ROM
The IBM ThinkPad 385XD comes with a 24X-10X variable speed CD-ROM that can be serviced by IBM authorized service personnel.

Audio
The ThinkPad 385XD systems support Sound Blaster Pro applications and come with built-in stereo speakers (with subwoofer) and microphone. The systems are also equipped with two jacks. One is for external stereo speakers or a headphone. The second jack is for an external microphone. A separate dial volume control is located toward the rear on the side of the keyboard.

Video
The ThinkPad 385XD systems have PCI bus support with video acceleration, providing exceptional video performance.

Infrared
The systems have an IR transceiver for wireless file and data transfer and printing. The ThinkPad 385XD models are designed to be compatible with the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) IR data link specification with speeds up to 4 Mbps.

Preinstalled software provides wireless file transfer, file synchronization, and clipboard data transfer. With the IR feature, data can be exchanged with any system, accessories, or personal digital assistants (PDAS) supporting the same specifications and data transfer speed. The IR feature may require the separate purchase of the appropriate hardware.

Other features
The systems have the full complement of ports -- enhanced parallel port, SVGA (external display), pointer-keyboard-keypad, and serial. The latest enhancement features a universal serial bus (USB) port. An additional connector supports the ThinkPad 385XD port replicator
